Srinagar, Oct 15 (KNO): "Families can play a vital role in recognising warning signs of mental health issues as strong support is essential for those facing these challenges," mental health experts said. Speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), mental health specialists said that family members are uniquely positioned to observe changes in behaviour, mood or functioning in their loved ones. They said early identification of these signs can significantly influence the outcomes for those experiencing mental health challenges. Dr Mansoor, head of the psychiatry department at GMC Anantnag, said, “In today’s fast-paced world, where we feel constant pressure to meet obligations and achieve success, fostering a home environment that prioritizes mental well-being is crucial. Families can provide critical support during crises, ensuring that individuals receive appropriate care.” He said it is important to create emotional stability, understanding and a sense of belonging within the family unit. Dr Mansoor further suggested that workshops and seminars could educate community members about mental health issues, helping to reduce stigma and promote a holistic sense of wellness. “Trained volunteers can offer one-on-one support to help individuals navigate their mental health challenges,” he said. "Mental health is not a destination but a continuous journey. Valuing good mental health as a core asset is essential.” Dr Afshan, another psychiatrist, highlighted signs families can notice, such as changes in sleep patterns, withdrawal from social interactions, dramatic mood swings, altered eating habits, difficulties in concentrating and feelings of hopelessness. She advised families to engage in open communication, encourage loved ones to consult mental health professionals and help structure daily routines that include regular exercise, sufficient sleep and balanced nutrition. According to experts, individuals with strong support systems tend to recover faster and manage their conditions more effectively. They said family support can also help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage individuals to seek treatment without fear of judgment. By recognising warning signs early and providing consistent support, families can assist their loved ones in navigating challenging mental health conditions, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and resilience, they added—(KNO)
